Let me tell you a little about me.
I have been practicing therapy since 2008 and a licensed therapist since 2013 with the Board of Behavioral Services (California LMFT #53944). Although I am a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I currently reside in New York. This has allowed me to expand experience beyond therapy with other social service opportunities as well as help to bring more context and skills to my work as a therapist.
Nearing the end of college, I thought I would become a math teacher and took on a tutoring job. The program I worked for provided private school tuition, tutoring, and summer educational activities for underserved middle school youth living in Richmond, California. I loved my job but during my time trying to teach them what they needed to know to be successful in the classroom, they had a difficult time focusing because of what was going on with their friends, family, and community. One of my strongest memories was tutoring a 6th grader in math who was having trouble focusing on his homework. He was too worried about the safety of his family due to the violence in his neighborhood to focus on school. And I get it- the need to be safe trumped everything else in his life. We ended up closing the books so he could talk to someone about his concerns. At that point, I realized that therapy was my path.
